Dual-basket air fryers have become common in Indian shops and online listings, and they look like an easy upgrade: two drawers, two dishes, one machine. But “two baskets” isn’t automatically better. Each basket is smaller than a single large one, the machine takes more counter space, and there’s more to wash. Here’s how the two types compare, and which suits which kind of household.
How each type works
Single basket: one drawer with one heating element and fan above it. Everything in the drawer cooks at the same time and temperature.
Dual basket: two separate drawers side by side, each with its own heating element and fan. You can set each one to a different time and temperature. Most have a feature, often called “sync” or “match”, that adjusts start times so both drawers finish together.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Single basket | Dual basket |
|---|---|---|
| Typical capacity | 2–6 L in one drawer | Around 7–9 L in total, split into two drawers |
| Largest single item | Fits bigger items in one layer | Each drawer is narrower; large items may not fit |
| Two dishes at once | No; cook one after the other | Yes, at different settings |
| Counter space | Compact | Wider, often noticeably so |
| Rated power | Typically about 1,200–1,800 W | Often higher; check the rating plate |
| Cleaning | One basket and crisper plate | Up to two of each |
| Price | Lower | Higher for similar build quality |
| Learning curve | Very simple | Slightly more settings to manage |
These are typical ranges from published specifications; individual models vary, so check current listings for exact figures.
Where a single basket wins
- Small families and couples. For one to four people cooking a batch of fries, paneer tikka or roast vegetables, a 4–5.5 L single basket is plenty. Our air fryer buying guide explains how to choose the size.
- Bigger single items. A wide single basket fits a larger fish, more cutlets in one layer, or a small cake tin more easily than half of a dual unit.
- Small kitchens. Counter space is precious in many city flats. A single basket takes up less room and is easier to store away.
- Simplicity. One dial or screen, one drawer, one thing to wash.
- Budget. You generally pay less for the same build quality and warranty.
Where a dual basket wins
- Larger and joint families. Cooking for five or more in a single basket often means two or three batches. Two drawers cut that down.
- Different dishes, different settings. Aloo tikki at 180°C in one drawer and a quick papad or masala peanuts in the other, ready together.
- Veg and non-veg kept apart. Many Indian households prefer not to cook vegetarian and non-vegetarian food in the same drawer. Two separate baskets make that easy.
- Entertaining. During festivals or when guests drop in, you can keep two snacks going at once.
- Flexibility. You can use just one drawer for a small snack and leave the other empty.
Power and your electrical points
Dual-basket models often carry a higher rated wattage because they have two heating elements. Before buying either type:
- Check the plug type and make sure you have a matching socket near the counter. High-wattage appliances should go into a socket rated for their current draw, which in many Indian homes means the larger 16 A socket.
- Avoid cheap extension boards and multi-plug adaptors.
- Consider a surge protector if your area sees frequent voltage fluctuations, especially during the monsoon.

Cleaning and upkeep
A dual-basket machine has more parts, but you only wash the drawer you used. Both types need the same care: let the basket cool, wash with warm soapy water and a soft sponge, and avoid metal scourers on non-stick coatings. Check that replacement baskets are available for the model you buy, since non-stick coatings eventually wear. Our guide on how to clean an air fryer basket has tips for baked-on grease.
Which should you choose?
| Your household | Better fit |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people, mostly snacks and reheating | Single basket, 2–4 L |
| 3–4 people, one dish at a time | Single basket, 4–5.5 L |
| 3–4 people who often cook two dishes together | Dual basket |
| 5+ people or a joint family | Dual basket, or a large single basket |
| Separate veg and non-veg cooking | Dual basket |
| Very small kitchen or tight budget | Single basket |
| Want to roast large items or bake bigger cakes | Large single basket or an air fryer oven |
Bottom line
A single basket is the right choice for most small and medium families: it’s simpler, cheaper, more compact and fits larger items. A dual basket earns its extra cost and counter space when you regularly cook two things at once, cook for five or more, or keep veg and non-veg separate. Be honest about how you actually cook day to day, and buy for that rather than for the occasional party.
How we chose

Frequently asked questions
Is a dual-basket air fryer worth it for a family of four?
Only if you regularly cook two different things at once, such as a snack and a side, or veg and non-veg dishes separately. If you mostly cook one item at a time, a 4 to 5.5 litre single basket is simpler and usually cheaper.
Does a dual-basket air fryer use more electricity?
Dual-basket models often have a higher rated wattage, but if you run both baskets together you cook two dishes in the time of one. Using only one basket for a small snack can use slightly more power than a smaller single-basket model would.
Can I cook a whole chicken in a dual-basket air fryer?
Usually not, because each basket is narrower than one large basket. Some dual-zone designs have a removable divider that turns them into one big basket. If you roast whole birds or large items, check the basket dimensions first.
Which is easier to clean, single or dual basket?
A single basket. A dual-basket model has two drawers and two crisper plates to wash every time you use both, although you only need to clean the one you used.
